Astrophysical black holes are the easiest objects to describe mathematically: characterized by
their mass and spin parameters. Yet, they are very difficult to characterize observationally
because no observable radiation directly comes out from these objects. The characterization is
primarily done by observing and analyzing the radiation that originates from the matter
surrounding the black holes. In this presentation, first, I’ll provide a brief overview of these
exotic objects and their observational signatures. Later, I’ll talk about how we use theoretical
understandings and numerical experiments to interpret the observations.
