Class of transition metal oxides such as tungsten oxide, molybdenum oxides,
etc., act as photochromic materials and undergo a reversible color change from native
transparent state (characterized by visible and infrared (IR) transmittance) to blue colored
state (characterized by the transmission of only visible light and blocking IR). Conventional
3D nanomaterials based photochromic materials are active under harmful UV irradiation.
Mechanism of photochromism in these materials has also been subject of debate. In this
presentation, a novel method to synthesize 2D photochromic materials which are active
under sunlight or visible light will be discussed. A photochromic mechanism based on small
polaron formation will be presented. Further, the photochromic threshold as a function of
processing temperature in these materials will be discussed. Finally, the application of
synthesized 2D photochromic materials in photo electrochromic devices, and in
photodegradation of organic pollutants will be demonstrated. |
