The combinatorial reliability optimization problem as defined in terms of redundancy optimization can be be classified into two categories. The first one is maximization of system effectiveness (reliability) subject to various resource restrictions, such as cost, weight, and volume consumption; and the second one is minimization of system cost subject to the condition that the associated system reliability be required to be equal to or greater than a desired level. Thereby, the redundancy optimization problem can be formulated in a variety of different mathematical programming expressions depending on the associated system structures (series, parallel, parallel-series, series-parallel) and problem objectives. In the presentation, I shall highlight the applications of advanced optimization techniques to solve the reliability optimization problems.
Fuzzy set theory has been applied to reliability theory/engineering with great success in the past two decades. The incorporation of the fuzzy set theoretic concepts into the multidisciplinary area of reliability theory has been done by modifying the basic assumptions underlying the definition of reliability of a component or system. In the presentation, I shall also discuss about fuzzy system reliability. |
