The Earth is one of the best explored planetary bodies using different tools and methodology, which is, however to understand its deeper structure in light of studying the nature of crustal and mantle dynamics is a great challenge to the geo-scientific community. The generating mechanism of earthquake that occurs, even beneath the similar geotectonic set up is a puzzle and it becomes more intriguing when the seismogenesis in the different seismogenic belts of the world (interplate / oceanic subduction zones / stable intraplate, etc) becomes intricate and enigmatic in sense of understanding what caused the genesis of earthquakes of different sizes at varying depths. Application of passive source high resolution geo-tomography can provide significant information about deeper earth structure, which in turn helps understanding the key issues of earthquake generating processes and the role of structural heterogeneities in dictating the style of rupture by piercing deeper layers of the Crust and the Mantle of the Earth.
Several case histories in light of Indian tectonics will be discussed during the presentation.
