In recent years, advent of high throughput technologies to measure the mammalian transcription have made us to realize to the fact that the genome is pervasively transcribed to give rise to thousands of small and long non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs). NcRNAs which are more than 200 bases long are termed as long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs). Functional investigations on lncRNAs revealed they regulate key biological pathways such as chromatin organization; lineage specification and genomic imprinting there by contribute in proper organismal development. LncRNAs are often aberrantly expressed in human cancers and diseases; however the biological functions of the vast majority remain unknown. In the current presentation I will highlight the identification of new regulatory lncRNA molecules with a role in human disease. I will discuss the molecular mechanisms by which these RNA species function and contribute in disease pathogenesis. |
