In a classic paper by Alexei Kitaev (2001) existence of Majorana fermions type excitation appearing in the form of edge state were predicted for a superconducting 1-D spinless fermions chain. Appearance of these boundary states was shown to be related to a
topological phase transition. Since then there has been a tremendous progress both on the theoretical and the experimental front on this topic. In this talk I will first discuss a new route to the topological description of these system using degeneracies of non-hermitian Hamiltonian (exceptional point). Then I will discuss a recent experimental proposal by us which provides a unique interferometric signature of Majornana bound state in a Aharonov–Bohm geometry which can not be faked by any accidental zero energy Andreev bound state. Though there has been considerable progress on the experimental side but still a smoking gun experimental for detected of Majorana bound state is yet to be in place and hence the discussion of various possible experimental setups for detecting Majorana fermion type excitation continues to be of great importance. |
