Indian population is under severe threat from Cardiomatabolic syndrome. Around 45% of Indian population suffers from diabetes, hypertension and obesity. This is going to be a big economic burden on society and there is an urgent need to combat this situation. We initiated a program at Dr Reddy's in 2005 and our team discovered a new protein target AMP Kinase that modulates metabolic pathways and is an important player in controlling the glucose and lipid metabolism. The efforts from our group resulted in a small molecule modulator of AMP Kinase which was subjected to preclinical and toxicology studies leading to Phase I clinical trials. This molecule was an efficient activator of AMP kinase in humans and was well tolerated with no sign of any adverse effects in humans. This talk will describe our efforts in identifying the small molecule activator of AMPK kinase and finding related to preclinical and clinical studies. |
