Mechanistic studies of organometallic reactions are fascinating detective stories. Although major reaction
types of organometallic reactions are well established, surprises continue to crop up. In this talk, I will
primarily discuss the use of labeled substrates to unravel the mechanism of a few reactions. For example,
we have used Grignard reagents as alkylating agents and have studied their reactivity towards imines in the
presence of titanium(IV) alkoxides. The reactions with stoichiometric and catalytic amounts of
titanium(IV) isopropoxide are found to follow different pathways.
Similarly, it is possible to use isotopes to study the formation of azides from amines using a diazo transfer
reagent.
The examples illustrate how one can probe the nature of intermediates using isotopic labels |
