The Twelfth Plan has identified faculty issues as a key concern in the
country’s higher education sector. The success of Universities and
Colleges depends on the quality of their faculty. But as the labor
market for highly skilled employees becomes tight and global
opportunities increase, recruiting and retaining highly qualified
faculty becomes more difficult. Drawing on international literature and
her own research on recruitment and retention in the U.S. and Europe,
Dr. Opfer’s presentation will first outline a conceptual framework for
thinking about recruitment and retention as a continuum of action.
Underpinning this continuum is an understanding of the labor market for
faculty as being nested within, and continuously influenced by, a larger
labor market that is simultaneously both local and global. The majority
of the presentation will then focus on discussing the mechanisms
available to University leaders to recruit and retain high quality
faculty. In discussing the mechanisms available, she will share examples
of policies and practices that have been shown to improve recruitment
and retention outcomes.
