Markov chains and martingales are two important tools provided by probability theory. These are useful in answering questions arising in models like gambling systems, random walks etc. In this series of three lectures, a brief introduction to the theories of Markov chains and martingales will be given, which will be followed by various applications. The lectures will be kept at an elementary level, and should be accessible to undergraduate students who have taken a first course in probability.
