I will talk about how studies of nonlinear dynamics began, about the famous Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou
problem, what is going on in this problem now and issues surrounding so-called “integrability” and “nonintegrability,”
and about progress achieved in the strongly nonlinear granular systems. Along the way I will
touch upon the problems of rogue fluctuations (waves), long-lived nonlinear localized excitations, interactions
between solitary and acoustic waves and impact mitigation.
