Geochemical evidence shows that the total water inventory of the Earth is ~ 4-10 times that in oceans. In this talk I will discuss where and how the water is stored in the solid Earth, how the Earth got its water (delivered from exogenous sources and/or nebular condensation), and how the dehydration of subducting oceanic plates trigger volcanism leading to what is known as the “Pacific Ring of Fire.” The methodology involves a coordinated program of high pressure-temperature experimental studies, classical and statistical thermodynamic calculations (supplemented by density functional theory)and finite element modeling. |
