Room temperature ionic liquids, which are salts comprising large ionic constituents and are liquid at ambient conditions, have emerged in recent years as promising media for a variety of chemical reactions and applications. We are interested in these substances with a two-fold objective. While our early studies were focused on understanding the physicochemical properties of these liquids, the latter investigations are directed towards exploiting some of the unique properties of the ionic liquids for regulating or fine-tuning the fluorescence behavior of molecules. This talk will describe some of these findings focusing primarily on our recent results that point to microheterogeneous nature of these viscous liquids. |
