The electrons in single and multilayer graphene live in a two dimensional flat-land and their properties associated with the Dirac bands have been studied actively over the last two decades. In recent years, there have been experimental progress of proposals to flatten their band structure over a small range in the Brillouin zone either by producing moire patterns or through rhombohedral stacking. We will discuss how the flattening of bands leads to degenerate competing phases that are close by in energy, whose topological bands defines the character of their solutions depending on the specific ordering of the ground state. We will show that the application of a strong perpendicular electric field and carrier doping in rhombohedral multilayer systems leads to spontaneous spin-valley flavor polarization and triggers an orbital anomalous Hall effect, opening a new pathway to tune the magnetic properties of these ultrathin materials by means of electric fields. |
