The talk will discuss the properties of the elusive fundamental particle known as the neutrino. These particles exhibit a strange phenomenon in which one type of neutrino gets converted into another
while propagating. Consequently detectors sensitive to a particular type of neutrino will see less number of neutrinos. This phenomenon, known as neutrino oscillation, has been observed in several terrestrial detectors using neutrinos from natural and man-made sources. Results from these experiments have established that neutrinos have small but non-zero mass and there is mixing between different neutrino types. This signifies physics beyond the Standard Model of particle physics. In my talk, I will discuss the current status of the neutrino oscillation parameters, the challenges in the
precise determination of the yet undetermined parameters and the prospects of determining these in the current and future experiments. I will also discuss the possibilities of probing some other beyond the standard model scenarios in neutrino oscillation experiments. |
