Enhanced rock weathering is a United Nations recognised land-based negative emission technology which can be co-deployed with other climate change mitigation methods such as biochar application and afforestation/reforestation. Together these methods provide enormous opportunities for atmospheric carbon dioxide removal, soil carbon sequestration, crop/plantation yield increase and soil quality improvement. A thorough characterisation of the rock materials is of utmost importance prior to its application to soil to determine the carbon dioxide removal potential and produce safe food crops free from potential toxic element contamination. Co-application of rock materials with biochar could not only maximise the carbon capture benefits but also mitigate the potential risk of toxic element uptake in crops. Long term field-scale studies are needed across various soil and climatic conditions to thoroughly assess the carbon dioxide removal potential and associated risks of the enhanced rock weathering technology. |
