Ammonia (NH 3 ) is the most required chemical component in fertilizer industries. NH 3 is also
being potentially seen as the carrier of hydrogen gas(H 2 ) as H 2 is difficult and dangerous to
be carried in a large volume. Traditional Haber-Bosch process is quite energy heavy and has
significant carbon footprint. In this work, we attempt to formulate a green/grey alternative for
NH 3 production from H 2 and nitrogen (N 2 ) using a pulsed microwave discharge (2.45 GHz).
Additionally novel catalysts have been used along with the plasma to further enhance the
production. FTIR is used to quantify the yield and optimized the plasma properties(pulse
duration, duty cycle, gas ratio etc.). Optical emission spectroscopy(OES) and Laser Induced
Fluorescence (LIF) has been used to understand the in-situ kinetics and chemical properties
of the plasma. |
